Why do people go to hell?

Updated: Dec 12, 2020

But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

God is a God of justice and when man sinned in the beginning God could not override man's sin and say okay it's alright come I have forgiven you, forget about that sin thing-No!!. Why? The wages of sin is death, so man has sinned and man must die. But God loves man so much and since sin has captured man God cannot allow man to pay sin its wages because man does not have the capacity to save himself from sin.

But man must still pay the price for sin. So God decided to punish the sin of man on Himself by taking up human flesh in the person of Jesus and died the death of mankind. He completed fulfilled all the demands of sin for man as man then rose again to offer man life.

We cannot overemphasize the truth that sin and death were not God’s creation. They were the results of man’s action, choice, or rejection of life. Both spiritual and physical death were from man’s choice not from God. It was not God who punished man with death when man sinned. God out of love pre-informed man of the consequences of his choice but man disobeyed.

It was not God who made man sin. A man was made with the blessing of free will or choice. It is recorded in John 16: 9 that, the last enemy to be destroyed is death. This means that death is opposing to God’s plan and nature. Man has always been the focus of God’s love. The love for man did not change when man sinned. God did not become angry at man when he sinned. God did not afflict man with death and sickness when man sin.

To conclude that God punished or killed people because of sin is inconsistent with God’s nature. What God did when man sinned was to follow his salvation plan for man. God’s response to man’s sin was not destruction but salvation. Our opening text says that God commanded his love towards us when we were sinners. God’s love for us does not change because of sin.

This means that it was not God who needed the death or blood of Jesus to quench his anger and pacify his wrath. The death of Jesus was the demand of sin. Jesus became sin and faced death to defeat sin for us. It was sin that killed him not God. What God did was to give up Jesus to die for us. It was an act of love.

It was God who raised him from death. The role of God in our redemption was the given out of Jesus and the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus was the lamb of God not the lamb for God. God’s love is from everlasting to everlasting. It has never changed. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

John 3:16-19 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. Over the years people have been taught this mind that God is angry and He wants to send people to hell but actually God has never been angry from the beginning of Creation even till date. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. Anger (wrath) is a work of the flesh. God does NOT have works of the flesh in Him. God is a Spirit (John 4:24). Let's see: Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envying, murders, drunkenness, reveling, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. The first question that should come to your mind is if God has wrath why will He send people who have wrath to hell?

This clearly justifies God's character that He has never been angry before. Infact man cannot live long enough to see God's anger. So what then is God's character? Let's see the proceeding verse. Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. The word long suffering is another word for patience which means God has patience and this patience man cannot override it. God will never get to the point where He will tell you that Oh your own is enough die and go to hell. The bible clearly says His mercies are forevermore, infact it still says His mercies are new every morning.

Now back to our main subject, why do people then go to hell?

Now, when it comes to sin God has dealt with it forever, it is not a futuristic thing, it happened about 2000 years ago. So people who refuse this payment which God has provided for the atonement of their sins are the ones who by themselves decide to go to hell. Now God by the Holy Spirit through the preaching of the Gospel keeps telling a man to receive Christ but man says no. The funny thing is that even the sins of the unbelievers Christ has paid for it all. So when a man ignores the gospel and is not saved till the day he dies, there is no more chance for salvation, then since he does not have God to face eternity, he faces darkness. The absence of God in a man is what is called Hell. When you don't have light darkness comes in automatically, when you don't have eternal life, surely you have eternal condemnation. Romans 8:1 tells us there is no condemnation for those in Christ. The only reason why a man is not condemned is because He is in Christ. So if you are not in Christ you are already one step close to being eternally condemned. Let's see two scenarios in the Old Testament:

The ark of Noah which was a typology of Jesus, Noah preached salvation to the people of his time and asked them to come into his ark for 120 years. But the people refused saying nothing like that. But until the day Noah entered the ark and the door was shut there was no heavy rain.

Many people say it was God who sent the rain to fall and destroy the people but actually no, they were destroyed by the destroyer because once light steps out of a place the only thing that comes in without permission is darkness. The presence of God in a place is the absence of destruction, as long as God is there there can never be destruction in that place.

The reason why this earth is still sweet for people to live is because Christians are still here but the day we shall live that will be the destruction of the earth by the evil one satan. Sodom and gomorrha another scenario where people say it was God who destroyed sodom. Lott the brother of Abraham was a typology of God's presence in Sodom, the day Lott and his household left sodom was the same day it rained fire and brimstone.

Once God leaves a place the end product is destruction. God is not the destroyer of lives, destruction is with a man. John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. The only thing God gives to a man is life, not death. 1 John 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. You cannot find any act of darkness in God. God has never killed before and will never ever kill anyone, anybody preaching a killer God to you is in partnership with satan not God. Hebrews 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil. If it was the devil who had the power of death, how then do people say it was God killing in the Old testament? It's because they don't see Jesus as God. Jesus is the word became flesh. Which means logos and logos means logic which also means the thinking pattern of God on two feet. Whatever Jesus did not or does not do, God has not done it. JESUS NEVER KILLED ANYONE SO LET NO MAN ATTRIBUTE DEATH, DESTRUCTION AND CONDEMNATION TO GOD. I plead with every man to Receive Christ today if you have not because this is the only way to eternal life. God's desire is that you be saved. 1 Timothy 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.
