What is God's wrath? And who will face God's wrath?
JESUS CHRIST, OUR PROPITIATION: Ephesians 5:6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the WRATH OF GOD comes upon the SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE. Colossians 3:6 6 Because of these things the WRATH OF GOD is coming upon the SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE, Who are sons of disobedience? Ephesians 2:1-3 And you He made alive, who WERE DEAD in trespasses and sins, 2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the SONS OF DISOBEDIENCE, 3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were BY NATURE CHILDREN OF WRATH, just as the others. "..by nature" - the nature is the state of being dead in sins and trespasses. John 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who DOES NOT BELIEVE the Son shall not see life, but THE WRATH OF GOD abides on him.” The sons of disobedience are unbelievers. Those who reject the gospel or Christ's sacrifice for their sins. Therefore the wrath of God on sin does not come to a born again believer but to those who reject Christ(unbelievers) their only payment for sin. And His wrath is His absence. The totality of God's wrath ON SIN was poured out (emptied) on Christ, who is the propitiation for our sins. 1 John 2:2 And He Himself is the PROPITIATION for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
What is propitiation? Propitiation means APPEASEMENT or SATISFACTION of God's wrath on sin. It simply means payment. In the Old Testament the high priest entered the Most Holy yearly, with the blood of sacrificial lamb and smeared it on the mercy seat. Leviticus 16:15-16 “Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, bring its blood inside the veil, do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat.
16 So he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, for all their sins; and so he shall do for the tabernacle of meeting which remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness. That blood atoned for the sins of Israel for one year. That blood on the mercy seat covered the sins of Israel and appeased God's wrath on sin. But only for one year. But that was a shadow of good things to come. Hebrews 9:11-12 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. 12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. Why is Christ's sacrifice superior? Because He is 3 in one as compared to Old Testament system. 1. HE IS THE BLOOD OR PROPITIATORY SACRIFICE.
1 John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the PROPITIATION for our sins. The word propitiation is translated from the Greek word "hilasmos" and it means the propitiatory sacrifice. Same word in 1 John 2:2 above. 2. HE IS THE HIGH PRIEST
Hebrews 2:17 Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make PROPITIATION for the sins of the people. The word propitiation here is translated from Greek "hilaskomai" which means the one who offers the propitiatory sacrifice. 3. HE IS THE MERCY SEAT. Romans 3:25 whom God set forth as a PROPITIATION by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed. The word propitiation is translated from Greek "hilasterion" and it means MERCY SEAT. And His sacrifice is once and for all time. His does not cover sin. He takes away sin. Hebrews 9:25-26 not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another 26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
Have you misunderstood the message of God's wrath? 1. God hates sin and personally I do, because I know what sin does to people's life. It can bring sicknesses, death, frustrations etc. I believe TRUE believers are not looking for opportunities to sin rather to live free from sin. 2. However, God love's sinners and so do I. He is love and His love is AGAPE, meaning without conditions, that's; “He will not love u more because you're good or less because you're bad”. 3. How have we been made righteous? Or how have we been accepted to God? Is it because we behaved well? Or because we confess all our sins? Absolutely no! “Only by faith and not good works” (Eph 2:8,9). 4. Then who will suffer God's wrath? Are they those with or without character OR those with or without faith of Christ? I solemly submit, “only those without faith and faith alone” Remember, ungodliness is simply rejection to believe Christ. 5. God's wrath will not come to any believer based on their behavior but because of one's rejection to have faith in God's son. I ultimately submit again; “ If God is judging people based on behavior, then all of us are in trouble of hell (Rom 3:23)” Before God, there is no small or big sin! Sin is sin! 6. Then what's Paul saying in Col 3:3-11? He is encouraging those of faith to live a lifestyle different from those without faith. Inspiring them to focus on their heavenly new nature in Christ. But not that they will suffer wrath for those things, rather, that's how normal those without faith and are bound to suffer wrath, live. 7. Forget about those who misuse God's grace or think grace is fake or a license to sin. Or those who belittle grace, cause controversy and confusion. It's a theological error to picture God as being schizophrenic; He is love, He is wrath-That's contradictory! “God is love” period! And that's His nature.
