UNDERSTANDING THE SCRIPTURES
Some Christians think we can just give our opinion on Biblical matters. They assume things with no grounded scriptures to back their beliefs. They have long been taught certain things they believe and when they see posts or comments contrary to it,they quickly ignore it or call it names, instead of asking questions. The Pharisees killed Jesus because he said things contrary to what they had believed for long, while they were the ones in the wrong.Saul of Tarsus persecuted the church, thinking they were in the wrong.
That you have been taught certain things or know certain things for long, does not always make it right. Those who desire knowledge are always making inquiry, listening to others and open minded to learn. But a fool ignores knowledge. Proverbs 24:7 says, Wisdom is too high for a fool. I had also believed that Elijah was taken away by a CHARIOT OF FIRE all my life, until, l re-read that account and found out it wasn't so. Read it for yourself: 2 Kings 2:1 & 11. We are not asked to READ the Bible but to STUDY - 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Observe How nobles behave: Act 17:11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. They received the word first, not criticized it first, then examine them, not in their head or by their opinion but by the scriptures, then held on to the truth. If you keep defending your church doctrine, your church beliefs and what your pastor says, you will be disappointed to find out that there are no denominations in heaven but Christians! Part-2
We are not called to argue the scriptures but we can reason the scriptures among another. The more we do this, with an open mind, to come to the knowledge of the truth and not compete, the better we know the truth and hold on to it. This is to the advantage of our walk in Christ.
I have seen many excuse themselves out of such reasoning by saying,l am not here for argument, some say you, hold on to your belief and let me hold mine, while others says there is nothing you say,l can't change my mind.
Well, we all know in part and God intends to use us all to build one another. So,we all need share our conviction to arrive at the truth. But all these must strictly be done within the confine of the Word of God.
Someone said,we can't all believe and preach the same thing. Well, that is not what the word says: The Church was given the 5 Fold ministry to build the saints, through teaching. Ephesians 4:13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Act 17:2 And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures. Here, Paul went to the synagogue of the Thessalonica and reasoned not from their custom, the visions he had had or the things he thinks but from the scriptures.
Act 17:3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ. He reasoned the scriptures, opening scriptures to scriptures,to proof his point from the scriptures Only. Acts 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks
Here again, Paul at Corinth, reasoned the scriptures with the people. And Aquila and Priscilla believed. But some fellow determined not to be convinced, stayed glued to their old beliefs after Paul had reasoned with them for one year. Rather they arrested him with an accusation:
Act 18:13 “This man,” they charged, “is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law.” The Account of Apollos: Act 18:24-25 spoke of Apollos,an eloquent preacher but only knowledgeable of the baptism of John.
Verse 25-26 says Aquila and Priscilla heard Apollos preach and expounded more unto him perfectly the word of God.Having reasoned with them he believed.Watch the resultant effect on his ministry.
Act 18:28 For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ. Having been open to correction,he convinced the Jews from the scriptures not from what he thinks, what John said or the visions he had but from the scriptures.
Sometimes, you think what you know is right of the word, but until you listen to another on that subject and reason the scriptures with them, you will remain in the wrong. In the course of reasoning, they may find out they are the ones in the wrong.
Another unheard off we see sometimes is how people argue the Bible out of the Bible. They believe things with no footing in the word and insist on their point. This is not called reasoning of scriptures but arguing scriptures. Of this, we have been warned to desist.
2 Tim 2:14 Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. There are also some more amazing ones who even when you show them verses of the scriptures and read, they still refuse to let go their belief.
They are men who believe in their experience and pastors beyond the word of God. God's aim is for us all to come to the unity of the Faith and this can only happen in the word,if we humbly allow the Word of God to be the final authority over every subjects and matters.
You,as a preacher must be honest and faithful to the one who called you.You don't own the flock. You are only hired to tender the flock.Use the master's material which is the word of God to feed the flock and nothing else.
l have countless of time, apologized to my congregation on certain things l have taught them.l tell them we now have a brighter light on the subject. Be humble enough to admit you are wrong, and straight things out than continue in error. Someday, they will find out themselves and walk away on you!
After a long time in ministry with disciples, miracles, signs and wonders,Paul's only cry was: Phil.3:10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death.
May the Lord grant you understanding.
