Renewing of the mind
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
When a person gets born again, he receives a new spirit and not a new mind. The mind must therefore be renewed to accept and live the new life he has received. Our conduct, behaviors or lifestyles depend on our thought pattern or the programming of our mind. The believer whose mind is not renewed with God's word will still conduct himself like an unbeliever even though such a person is born again.
Therefore, getting saved is different from renewing the mind. The latter requires for you to put up conduct consistent with your new nature. Renewing the mind produces spiritual growth. Renewing the mind comes by knowledge of who you are in Christ, what you have in Christ and what Christ can do through you.
A renewed mind will produce good conduct or good lifestyle. Get your mind renewed by God's word through diligent study and meditation so that you can live out the character and nature of the new man you have become. Though you were not saved by your good conduct, good conduct is expected of you now that you are born again. Though works have no effect on salvation, it offers a lot of benefits to you the believer.
A spiritually dead person is the man who has not received the life of Christ. We receive the life of Christ when we believe the gospel of Christ. Faith in the resurrection of Christ is life. This life is instantaneous, complete and full at the moment we hear and believe the gospel.
We don't grow in Christ to receive more or better life. We don't try to maintain this life. It is received once; it comes in its fullness and it is incorruptible. Once we receive this life, it is eternal. This means it is everlasting and can never die. However, in order to live well and enjoy the blessings of this life, one must align his thinking or reasoning pattern to the realities of the life in Christ.
This is what is called renewing or reprogramming of the mind. The renewing of the mind is not instantaneous but progressive. We must daily get our mind renewed. Salvation is fully the responsibility of the Savior. However, we have the responsibility to get our minds renewed by God’s word.
The renewing of the mind is done by teaching or through knowledge. As you are exposed to the realities of who you have become in Christ, what you have in Christ and what Christ has done and can do through you, your thinking pattern becomes fashioned in those realities and it then becomes your life style.
A person with unrenewed mind though born again lives like an unbeliever in conduct. Unrenewed mind thinks and does things as though not born again. Unrenewed mind does not destroy eternal life but it produces fruits contrary to the nature of who he has become in Christ.
The believer in Christ, has the love of God as his nature. He does not struggle to love. He is born of love and has the nature of love in Christ Jesus. Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Vs.23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. With the nature of God there is no longer a need for the law; we have the spirit of God as our guide.
Galatians 5:18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. We have been led by the spirit of Christ from the hold of Sin and Death into obedience and are alive. Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death…
Vs 4 … That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit… Vs 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. Vs 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
The believer is the one who has the spirit of life, and has fulfilled the righteousness of the law. We are of the spirit. We are alive from the dead. The law is for spiritually dead men who are under the hold of Sin. Sons of God that have his spirit. That is his nature. Galatians 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. The word ‘IF’, is the same as SINCE; since we exist in the spirit, let us also conduct ourselves in the spirit.
The believer naturally lives in God’s righteousness as his sons and so does not need the law. He has fulfilled the righteousness of the law by his nature and birth in Christ Jesus. We have the freedom from the law but not freedom from our obligations in our righteousness in Christ as sons of God.
We have learnt to walk and conduct ourselves in our nature in Christ. Galatians 5:13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. So when we walk in the Spirit, the righteousness of the law is fulfilled and we show that the love of God is superior to the law of carnal ordinances.
Romans 8:3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: Vs 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
