Genesis 1: 26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

In the book of Genesis, we were told of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and the tree of life and how Adam chose to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil instead of the tree of life.

JOHN 1:4-5 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

From the above verse, we know that life was in Christ, therefore the tree of life was symbolic of Christ and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil also symbolized the activities, choices, and desires of man’s heart.

God’s plan or intention for man was communicated to Moses. His plan was for man to become the image of God by eating the tree of life for man to live forever, become fruitful, multiply and have dominion over the earth.

God commanded man not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil but not the tree of life. Genesis 1: 26-27 was God’s intention or plan but not the actual creation of man. Man could have only achieved the state of his image if he had eaten of the tree of life.

The second Adam who is Christ Jesus is the image of God. God wanted man to be like Christ. It is emphatically stated in Colossians 1: 15 that Christ is the image of God and also corroborated in Hebrews 1: 3 that Christ is the express image of God. There is no reference of the first Adam as the image of God in the Epistles. Adam never had eternal life because he rejected life through unbelief.

All men who are born after the image of Adam are spiritually dead and for that matter are not in the image of God. A man can only become the image of God if he is born after Christ. To be born after Christ is to be born again by eating of the tree of life which is expressing faith in the gospel of Christ.

The man in Christ is the will or plan of God from creation. However, Adam’s disobedience brought sin and death into the world. Unbelievers are not in the image of God; believers are in the image of God. I am in the image of God because I am born after Christ by faith in the gospel of Christ.

2 Cor. 4: 4 In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

Jesus Christ is the image of God. He is the exact presentation of the Father. God is a Spirit, we can only know Him in Christ. Christ is the full expression of the nature and character of the Father.

Christ is God in the flesh. When you know Christ, you know the Father. In Christ dwells the fullness of the Godhead. The plan of God was for Adam to choose life and become his image and live forever but Adam chose death and died. Adam, therefore, was created without eternal life. He was supposed to express faith in Christ to receive life.

Therefore the old creation in Adam is not the true image of God. Anybody outside Christ is not in the image of God. The new creation in Christ is in the image of God. The believer is a participator of the divine nature of God.

We have the Spirit and character of God. Unbelievers are not in Christ and for that matter are not in the image of God. Unbelievers are in the image of the first Adam.
